Atarashiki Tsuchi (The New Earth) (Drottfilm, 1941). Swedish One Sheet (28" X 39").
This pre-WWII Japanese-Nazi Germany collaboration follows a young man returning to Japan after attending agricultural school in Germany. He's expected to marry his adopted family's eldest daughter, but tries to refuse tradition in order to marry a German journalist. She however, espouses Aryan ideals, which did not allow for mixed-race unions. Distraught over being rejected, the young man's Japanese betrothed tries to fling herself into a volcano, but he saves her at the last moment. Not surprising, the film was not well received by Japanese audiences, who largely perceived a condescending tone from the Germans. It's not known how Swedish audiences interpreted the film, but this poster from the film's first release there in 1941 by artist Eric Rohman (Gilda, The Godless Girl) is quite lovely, with endearing portraits of stars Setsuko Hara and Isamu Kosugi. Only touchup to the folds was needed. Very Fine on Linen.
