Description
Anna Christie (MGM, 1930). Folded, Fine+. Partial German Three Sheet (37.5" X 54.25").Shot in only twenty days, Anna Christie was Greta Garbo's first sound film and was marketed with the slogan "Garbo Talks!" Of all its stars, "The Swedish Sphinx" was the one that MGM kept out of talking films the longest for fear she would not make the transition successfully like so many other actors. As for audience appeal, concerns proved unwarranted, as the actress entranced moviegoers and confirmed she would have no trouble succeeding where other silent era stars had failed. Critics were equally impressed, and the Academy rewarded Garbo with a Best Actress nomination for her role as the emotionally wounded, estranged daughter of an alcoholic skipper of a coal barge (George F. Marion). Two versions of the film exist, one with English dialogue directed by Clarence Brown, and a German version under the direction of Jacques Feyder. A first time offer, it has edge and fold wear, fold separations, creases, pinholes, and moderate tears. There are minor paper lifts, unobtrusive stains, small chips, and some subtle toning. The poster also displays light touchup at some of the crossfolds, and it has pieces and strips of cellophane tape on the verso bracing some of the folds, tears, pinholes, and splices behind the chips. There are a couple of sections of paper on the verso attached with adhesive, and the poster also has inked and graphite writing in Garbo's lower image. Most of these scattered issues do little to dim the glowing stone litho portrait of Garbo found on this exceptionally scarce piece. Folded, Fine+.
