In this pre-Code drama adapted from Eugene O'Neill's 1921 play, Greta Garbo stars in her first sound role as Anna, a woman returning to her father after years away at sea, seeking reconciliation and a fresh start. She meets Mat Burke (George F. Marion) and Marthy (Marie Dressler), who bring both warmth and humor, while her budding romance with sailor Mat Burke is complicated by her past. Garbo's performance, coupled with the film's rich dialogue and emotional depth, earned her critical acclaim. Backed to linen, restoration has addressed fold separation, chipping to the borders and fold junctions. The restoration was handled well, but some issues remain visible. Only a second time offering at Heritage.
