Description

A Sainted Devil (Paramount, 1924). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (26.75" X 41") Style A.
Rudolph Valentino, considered one of Hollywood's earliest sex symbols, starred in this romantic drama as his last film under contract with Paramount-Famous Players-Lasky, who he had been signed with since his debut for the studio in The Sheik. The actor had been facing financial troubles and grew frustrated with the limited input he had in his films, so he went on strike against the studio until his demands for a higher salary and more artistic control were met. Following a two-year hiatus from acting spent abroad, Valentino accepted a new two-film contract from the studio that met his larger-than-life salary demands. However, the actor's lavish spending sank him further into debt, and his health began to gradually decline through the production A Sainted Devil and his other films over the following two years, and he passed away in 1926 at the height of his fame. The one sheet offered here is one of the few existing pieces that can provide a look at the film now considered lost, and features a fashionable Valentino coolly posing while hosting a smoking cigarette. The poster's borders, title, and Valentino's credit have been airbrushed to treat minor chips, tears, and fading, as has the lower segment of the vertical fold which had a noticeable separation with slight paper loss.
