DescriptionDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (c. 1888). Very Good+. Theater One Sheet (27.5" X 40").
Considered a classic of gothic literature since the moment it reached bookshelves, Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde became an instant source of inspiration for the British-born stage actor, Richard Mansfield. Living at New York at the time, Mansfield secured the rights to the story for a dramatic adaptation, debuting the performance in 1887. His stunning portrayal of the dual role became synonymous with the character for many audiences, so much so that he was actually accused of being Jack the Ripper when he took the show to England in 1888. This stone litho one sheet comes from a Chicago performance of the play during Mansfield's successful national tour, and the poster shows mild edge and fold wear, some fold separations, creasing, pinholes, and tears into the interior. There are a few pieces of cellophane tape in the borders, and the poster has been mounted on a foam core board. Very Good+.
Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000.
