    Description

    Underworld (Paramount, 1927). Lobby Cards (2) (11" X 14").
This excellent crime drama comes from director Josef von Sternberg and is based on a story by Ben Hecht, who had begun his career as a playwright on Broadway. As Hecht's first screenplay, it is nothing short of sensational and won him the first ever Academy Award for Best Original Story. This is the seminal gangster tale that would influence a generation of filmmakers, with Hecht soon scripting another gangster classic, Scarface, five years later. This picture centers on brutal mob boss Bull Weed (George Bancroft) who takes on down-on-his-luck Clive Brook as a driver/ advisor with class. Nicknamed Rolls Royce, Bull's protege is only too happy to have a home and a library to keep him occupied. Trouble begins when Rolls Royce becomes attracted to Bull's girlfriend Feathers McCoy (Evelyn Brent) and Bull is sent up on a murder rap. These rare and desirable cards show a crease in the center and a small tear at the top of one. And the other card has creases in the right side and top corners, and a small tear in the left border with paper tape on the reverse. Cards from this groundbreaking classic rarely turn up, and when they do, they are quickly snapped up. Fine+.
