    Description

    Underworld (Paramount, 1927). Insert (14" X 36").
Crime is one of the oldest genres of the cinema. With the introduction of Prohibition in the United States in 1920 and the organized crime that came with it, the crime genre rose to new heights. In 1927, director Joseph von Sternberg riddled the silver screen with the bullets from Ben Hecht's screenplay when he made Underworld. George Bancroft portrayed Bull Weed, a gangster based loosely on the real-life crime-boss Al Capone and co-starring Clive Brook and Evelyn Brent. The film was such a sensation that it is widely regarded as the picture that launched the gangster genre that swept the cinema in the 1930s and gave rise to stars like Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Paul Muni and Humphrey Bogart. The poster was never folded, and had a large chip from the lower left corner into the title box and a smaller chip from the upper right corner into the Paramount logo. There were a couple of small chips in the left border and into the border of the upper left corner. There was some staining in the lower and upper portion of the poster and a horizontal crease below the Bancroft image as well as a couple of tears in the right side of the poster into the artwork. Airbrush work and paper patching has brought the poster back to its former glory. Very Good/Fine on Paper.
