    Description

The Stool Pidgeon (Universal Film Manufacturing, 1915). Swedish Linocut One Sheet (23" X 35").
Lon Chaney stars in this crime film that also marked his directorial debut. Although the film is lost, what survives is this very rare art deco-inspired poster created for the Swedish release of the film. It was produced using the Linocut printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface and the sheet is inked with a roller called a brayer, and then impressed onto paper. Although linoleum as a floor covering dates to the 1860s, the linocut printing technique was used first by the artists of Die Brücke in Germany between 1905 and 1913 where it had been similarly used for wallpaper printing. They initially described these prints as woodcuts, which sounded more respectable. Linocut Swedish posters are seldom found, as only a very few were produced over a short period of time. Although Chaney stars in the film, J. Warren Kerrigan is the headliner of this poster, seen in bold swaths of orange and black. There are three tears in the bottom border, creasing, and edge wear along the right side. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
