    Description

The Petrified Forest (Warner Brothers, 1936). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
It was the film that would launch the career of one of the greatest actors in the history of Hollywood. But at the time, Humphrey Bogart was known as a bit part player, a man who cast Hollywood aside for legitimate acting on New York's Broadway. Warner Brothers bought the rights to Robert Sherwood's play The Petrified Forest and wanted Leslie Howard to reprise his role as the lead actor. Howard had one condition. Before he would accept the studio's offer, he demanded that Humphrey Bogart reprise his role as Duke Mantee the fugitive gangster who is risking recapture for a woman. Warners put up a fight, wanting Edward G. Robinson for the role, but Howard wouldn't hear of it. The studio relented and the rest was history as Bogart's performance would dominate the screen. This title card doesn't depict Bogart as the studio had no idea what would happen when the film was released. Instead, they focused on Leslie Howard and Bette Davis. Restoration has been performed in the form of touchup applied to pinholes into the interior with minor tears, a rounded bottom right corner, and some paper loss in the top border on the right side. The borders have been airbrushed, and there are still some small speckled stains in the interior. Fine+.
