    Description

The Big City (MGM, 1928). Window Card (14" X 22").
By the time The Big City was released, Lon Chaney had established himself as one of the biggest talents in the silent film world. His artistry in horror film make-up was highly regarded, as was his masterful ability to often embody characters that were physically deformed and/or plagued with intense melancholy. Versatility also became a hallmark of the actor, who also excelled in roles of hard-edged characters on both sides of the law. Chaney made ten films with director Tod Browning, all successful and truly memorable, including this early crime drama set in New York. Chaney stars as mob boss Chuck Collins, who steals a load of jewels from a rival gang led by Curly (James Murray) but is talked into going straight by the appropriately named Sunshine, played by Marceline Day, who had previously starred with Chaney in London After Midnight. Betty Compson is superb as Collins' moll, Helen. Original paper on this title is rarely offered for sale. Professional restoration on this window card has corrected horizontal creases, minor paper lifts, and pinholes in the interior, some of which were torn or enlarged. The borders, imprint area, title, and parts of the white image have been airbrushed, and the red background has received some color enhancement. There are a few minor stains still visible. Fine+ on Cardstock.
