The Big City (MGM, 1928). Silver Nitrate Title Lobby Card & Lobby Card Transparencies (5) (10.25" X 13").
By the time The Big City was released, Lon Chaney had established himself as one of the biggest talents in the silent film world. His artistry in horror film make-up was highly regarded, as was his masterful ability to embody characters that were physically deformed and/or plagued with intense melancholy. Versatility also became a hallmark of the actor, who excelled too in roles as hard-edged characters on both sides of the law. Chaney made ten films with director Tod Browning, including this early crime drama set in New York City. Chaney stars as mob boss Chuck Collins, who steals a load of jewels from a rival gang led by James Murray, but is talked into going straight by the appropriately named Sunshine - played by Marceline Day - who had previously starred with Chaney in London After Midnight. Betty Compson is superb as Collins' moll, Helen. These original celluloid transparencies were used to create black and white lobby cards, and are presented as a Heritage first. They were hand cut out of a sheet, so many have rough or uneven edges, and possibly a few unobtrusive chips. The transparencies are still in wonderful condition, showing only mild surface wear, with some light smudges and scuffs, and minor spots in the image areas. Overall Grade: Very Fine.
