    Description

Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler - Ein Bild der Zeit (UFA, 1922). German Photos (3) (9.5" X 12").
This lot includes three vintage, double weight, matte photos, two of which are sepia toned and one that is black and white. This influential, landmark film from director Fritz Lang, is one of the direct predecessors of the genre that would come to be known as film noir. Based on the book Dr. Mabuse the Gambler by Norbert Jacques, this is the story of a master criminal, played by Rudolf Kleine-Rogge (who also portrayed the inventor Rotwang in Lang's Metropolis), who plots to destroy Berlin, and make a huge profit in the process. Lang would make two additional Mabuse films in later years, one in 1933 and another in 1960. Dr. Mabuse is a master of disguise and telepathic hypnosis, as seen in these magnificent, phenomenally rare photos of the morphing Kleine-Rogge. The beardless portrait photo has a tiny stain in the upper right corner, and the profile shot has a right corner bend and corner bumps, a smudge in the bottom right, and a small speck in the left border. Very Fine-.
