Description
Angels with Dirty Faces (Warner Brothers, 1938). Insert (14" X 36").Warner Brothers pulled out all the top guns for this hard-hitting crime drama with studio stars James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, George Bancroft, and genius director Michael Curtiz. Growing up on the mean streets of New York, Rocky Sullivan (Cagney) is incarcerated early on for petty crimes and chooses the life of a gangster, becoming something of a local hero to the next generation of hoodlums, played here by the Dead End Kids -- Leo Gorcey, Billy Halop, and Huntz Hall. From his classic line "Whadda ya hear, whadda ya say?"' to his final scene of panicked crying as he is led to the electric chair, Cagney is simply riveting and deservedly earned his first Academy Award nomination for his performance. Pat O'Brien stars as Rocky's childhood friend who grows up to be a priest, tasked with saving the boys from the temptation of crime, and Ann Sheridan is the local girl-next-door. The film was an instant success, helping the careers of all involved. Prior to professional restoration, this insert had fold wear with extra horizontal creases, two small tears in the title, minor tears at the lower right corner and left and right sides that extend into the image area. The restoration is superb and these issues are no longer apparent. One of the most dramatic posters for this title, this insert is a rare and special item for collectors. Very Good/Fine on Paper.
