Description

The Mummy (Universal International, 1959). Fine on Linen. British Quad (30" X 40"). Bill Wiggins Artwork.
Released during Hammer Films' celebrated revival of Gothic horror, The Mummy reimagined the classic Universal monster cycle by drawing together story elements from The Mummy (1932), The Mummy's Hand, and The Mummy's Tomb into a richly atmospheric Technicolor production. Christopher Lee stars as the resurrected Kharis, whose terrifying return brings him into conflict with Peter Cushing's determined archaeologist, continuing the legendary screen partnership that helped establish the two actors as Hammer's reigning "Kings of Horror." Representing one of the studio's most successful and influential monster films, this exceptional British quad remains especially elusive, having been offered only three times previously at Heritage Auctions. Backed to linen, there was restoration to a 4.25" X 4" area of paper loss at upper left as well as touchup to the folds, pinholes, a few tears, and interior chips. Prior to backing, a paper patch and been applied to the back by the original owner. This was not removed when the poster was backed. A seminal entry in the Hammer cinematic bestiary, this country-of-origin quad ranks among the most sought-after of all 1950s horror posters.
