Directed with masterful restraint by Jacques Tourneur, the story follows Simone Simon as a troubled woman who fears she will transform into a black panther when aroused; after marrying the man she loves (Kent Smith), jealousy and paranoia drive her toward a dark and ambiguous fate. Eschewing overt special effects in favor of shadow, silence, and psychological tension, the film remains a landmark of sophisticated horror, and William Rose's haunting poster artwork perfectly mirrors its eerie, sensual mood-making it one of the most sought-after pieces in the genre. Airbrushing and touchup have been applied carefully to correct edge and fold wear, pinholes, fold separation, some tears and splits, a couple of chips further addressed by replacement, and image ghosting. Some of this may remain lightly visible and the linen has been trimmed closely to the borders.
