Held By the Enemy (ca. 1890s). Fine+ on Linen. British Theatre Poster (19.5" X 27.75").
Presented for the first time at Heritage Auctions, this charming late-19th-century theatrical poster for Held by the Enemy features richly detailed, narrative artwork capturing a moment of romantic intrigue, reflecting the popular stage melodrama by William Gillette. The play, a Civil War-era drama blending suspense and sentiment, was one of Gillette's early successes and helped establish his reputation as a prominent American playwright and actor. Airbrushing, touchup, and minor replacement have addressed edge and fold wear, creases, various tears, a few chips, and light stains in the side and bottom borders. Very minute trimming remains.
