Description

Stagecoach (United Artists, 1939). Folded, Very Fine+. One Sheet (27" X 41").
This rare and beautiful one sheet for John Ford's Stagecoach is among the most phenomenal and sought-after Western posters for its dynamic stone litho imagery brimming with frontier adventure. What makes this particular example so extraordinary is that it is the only unrestored copy we have ever had the privilege of selling. Released in the cinematic banner year of 1939, Stagecoach elevated the Western from B-movie status to a serious art form, weaving a powerful tale of nine strangers traveling through perilous Apache territory while showcasing Ford's mastery of character depth, action, and landscape, particularly the sweeping vistas of Monument Valley. It also marked a pivotal moment in cinema history with the casting of John Wayne, then considered a minor star known primarily for Poverty Row Westerns, whose low billing and modest salary reflected the skepticism of United Artists producer Robert Wagner, even as Ford fought for his inclusion. Wayne's breakout performance as the Ringo Kid vindicated Ford's instincts, catapulting him to stardom and establishing one of Hollywood's greatest director-actor partnerships. The film went on to receive seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, ensuring its legacy as one of the most influential Westerns ever made. Its flaws are very limited, including light fold wear and creases, pinholes with tears, small crossfold separation, and a handful of unobtrusive stains. This specific example has not come up for auction in nearly thirty years, and it is hard to imagine a better unrestored example existing at this late date. It is an exceptional opportunity for any serious movie poster collector.
