Description

World War II Propaganda (U.S. Government Printing Office, 1944). Folded, Very Fine-. War Bonds Poster (28.5" X 40") "To Have and to Hold."
Offered here is the evocative World War II propaganda poster "To Have and to Hold," issued by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1944 to promote the purchase of U.S. War Bonds on the home front.

The design centers on a striking photographic portrait of a young, blue-eyed girl gazing directly at the viewer, a powerful and emotionally resonant image intended to symbolize innocence, family, and the future Americans were fighting to protect. The title "To Have and to Hold," rendered in flowing red script at the top, echoes traditional marriage vows, reinforcing themes of commitment, responsibility, and safeguarding the next generation. At the bottom, the bold directive "BUY WAR BONDS" appears in strong blue lettering, leaving no ambiguity about the call to action.

The poster was likely produced in conjunction with the 6th War Loan Drive, which began in November 1944, one of the largest and most crucial fundraising efforts of the war. The child model is widely believed to be Elaine Altevogt, and the photograph is attributed to renowned portrait photographer Nickolas Muray, known for his vivid, emotionally engaging imagery.

This poster is a classic example of WWII-era Treasury advertising, skillfully blending sentiment and patriotism to connect personal family values with national duty, and remains one of the most memorable photographic war bond posters of the period.

An unrestored poster with bright color and a clean overall appearance. It may have general signs of use, such as edge and fold wear, faint toning, creasing, and unobtrusive smudging.
