    Description

You Can't Cheat an Honest Man (Universal, 1939). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style A, Jacques Kapralik Artwork.
The long-running "feud" between W. C. Fields and Charlie McCarthy, heard primarily on radio's Chase and Sanborn Hour, was the basis for this comedy, one of Fields' funniest. Fields plays shady circus manager Larson E. Whipsnade, who attempts to break up a romance between his daughter (Constance Moore) and Edgar Bergen. The story by Fields, as "Charles Bogle," is thin enough to allow the legendary comedian plenty of room to ad-lib, making this movie a joy to watch. Paper for Fields' movies, especially his important films such as this, is exceptionally scarce, and rarely turns up at public auction. This gem boasts artwork by the adored artist Jacques Kapralik, which is similar to that on the half sheet. The Kapralik one sheets from his brief stint with Universal are very scarce and highly desirable. This example has been skillfully conserved, addressing creases and thin surface scratches in the interior. Prior to restoration, the characters and title box had been cut out, removing the background and parts of the image. These issues have been rendered nearly imperceptible due to expert conservation, and the poster looks bright and beautiful on display. Good on Linen.
