    Description

The Gilded Lily (Paramount, 1935). One Sheet (27" X 41").
1934 was a banner year for lovely young actress Claudette Colbert. Out of the four films she made that year, three of them--the historical biography, Cleopatra, the romantic drama, Imitation of Life and the screwball comedy, It Happened One Night ---were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture. With success came confidence and clarity as to how she wanted to be cast, and after Cleopatra Colbert refused all such roles that portrayed her as overtly sexual. Colbert also began to assert control over how she was filmed, refusing to be shot from her right side, believing that her face was uneven and photographed better from the left. The astonishingly scarce, 1935 one sheet offered here for the first time by Heritage, with its jaw-dropping, larger-than-life portrait of Colbert, is an example of that control factor-it's rendered from her left side. With delicate curls, fluttering eyelashes, and a pearl draped neckline, the actress is radiant in this soft pastel stone litho. Gilded Lily is a charming romantic comedy, with Colbert as Marilyn, a stenographer, who has to choose between two suitors: Peter (Fred MacMurray), a financially strapped newspaper reporter, and Charles (Ray Milland), a British blueblood. With the benefit of professional restoration, this rare treasure has had touch up to a right fold tear, and a chip in the top right corner. The linen has been trimmed to the border, there is light wrinkling and a very small chip in the bottom right corner. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
