    Description

The General (United Artists, 1927). Lobby Card (11" X 14") Hap Hadley Artwork.
Buster Keaton brought the cast and crew of The General to the small town of Cottage Grove, Oregon to take advantage of the narrow gauge rail lines needed for the three antique locomotives he had purchased for the film. With the help of 500 extras from the Oregon National Guard, he directed the climactic shot of the locomotive Texas falling through the burning bridge during battle. The entire populace of Cottage Grove came out to watch the shooting, and were shocked at the spectacle of a full-size train crashing into the river below. The $42,000 shot ended up being the most expensive of the silent film era. For twenty years afterward, the wreck of the train was a tourist attraction, until World War II when it was salvaged as scrap metal. This lobby card has staining on the top border. Fine+.
