Description

The Cocoanuts (Paramount, 1929). Very Good on Paper. Insert (14" X 36").
Only offered once before in our auctions, it's been over a decade since Heritage last had the privilege of presenting an insert from the Marx Brothers' first movie. In fact, paper from this historic comedy title is so rare, we have only ever offered a handful of original advertisements for the film, with the insert being the largest format we have ever presented! It's a colorful piece very different in style to many of the Marx Brother's later film advertisements, featuring more realistically done portraits rather than the caricatures seen on many posters in subsequent films. Adapted from the Brothers' Broadway play with musical numbers composed by the great Irving Berlin, the film was a smashing sensation among moviegoers and triumphant start to the Marxes' motion picture careers. Very few of these inserts are known to still be in existence today, and this one now displays beautifully after conservation. The insert was backed on paper and had repairs made to fold wear and separation, creases, surface scuffs, and some tears, including a tear into Harpo's image. Corrections have also been made to chips in the borders and paper loss along the right border. The white background has been airbrushed and there is touchup applied to parts of the image. The insert was trimmed horizontally above the word "The" at the top with another horizontal trim at the bottom under the direction credits, both of which have been replaced. These corrections have resulted in a slight warp at the top and bottom that is typical to this type of repair. Given the rarity of the poster, especially one so well restored, fans of classic comedy should not pass up the chance to own such an incredible display piece as this!
