    Description

Sullivan's Travels (Paramount, 1941). Lobby Cards (2) (11" X 14"). From the Collection of Frank Buxton, of which the sale's proceeds will benefit The San Francisco Silent Film Festival.
Preston Sturges turned his talent for writing satire, comedy and social comedy to this story of a successful director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea), who wants to make a "serious" film after doing a series of fluff comedies. Hoping to see the "real" America, he dresses as a hobo and bums across the country, picking up a girl (Veronica Lake) along the way. Comedy turns to tragedy, which turns to romance, and results in one of the finest films to come out of the Golden Age of Hollywood. These two lobbies feature the pair and Lake flashes her peek-a-boo hairstyle on both. You knew the studio wanted to promote her and this image as they feature only Lake (in caricature) on the border art. One card has pinholes in the borders, soft surface scuffs, and unobtrusive smudges. The other card has been partially restored to address pinholes in the borders, small tears, and a couple of corner chips in the left side. The borders and white background have been partially airbrushed, and some of the text in the lower left corner has not been restored. Fine/Very Fine.
