Description

My Man Godfrey (Universal, 1936). Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41") Style D.
My Man Godfrey reteamed former real life husband and wife William Powell and Carole Lombard in one of Golden Age Hollywood's premier screwball comedies. Lombard's naïve New York socialite collects a "forgotten man" at the city dump in a scavenger hunt, hires him on as the family's butler, and proceeds to fall in love with him. Powell, for his part, is secretly a society swell himself, but plays along with the beautiful young girl and teaches the family a valuable lesson about snobbery. A sendup of the attitudes and behavior of the idle rich, the film resonated with Depression-era audiences, and continues to delight today thanks to the sparkling comedic and romantic chemistry between Lombard and Powell in performances that rank among their career bests. This is only the second time Heritage has offered the extremely rare style D one sheet for the film, thought by some to be the superior design for its more realistic and elegant portraiture of the starring couple. Prior to linen backing, the poster exhibited pinholes, very slight edge and fold wear, tiny border tears and corner creasing. Judicious touchup was applied to these issues, and the tip of the upper right corner replaced. The original color remains remarkably bright and vivid, and the poster would be an elite-tier addition to any collection.
