    Description

Mr. Robinson Crusoe (United Artists, 1932). Austrian Poster (49" X 73) and Original Artwork ( 8.75" X 13.75"). Austrian Titles: Broadway in Paradise and Ein Moderner Robinson.
Douglas Fairbanks fans will be delighted with this lot, which includes a stunning large format Austrian poster and original artwork by Margit Kovats. The next to last film featuring the long-reigning King of Hollywood, this charming picture could well have been the inspiration for TV's Gilligan's Island. While sailing on his yacht, Fairbanks bets his friends that, armed only with his toothbrush, he can survive and thrive, on a nearby desert island. With that, he jumps overboard and swims to shore, followed by his faithful dog. In a short time, he has constructed a lavish home for himself, stocked with every modern convenience - all made out of native materials - and has even managed to teach some of the island's animals to perform simple tasks. The icing on the cake is when he discovers a beautiful woman on "his" island whom he dubs Saturday (Maria Alba). This stone litho Austrian poster is in beautiful condition, a towering portrait of the tuxedoed Fairbanks and his girl Saturday. The watercolor study by Margit Kovats (created prior to the execution of the actual poster) shows a more swashbuckling image of Fairbanks with his lady love. It's interesting to note that the image of Fairbanks was changed from a primitive costume to the sophistication of a tuxedo. The artwork is quite nice and has a bit of glue residue on the verso. The poster has been mounted on linen, but no further restoration has been completed. Signs of handling include very small areas of surface paper loss near the top, light ink transfer from the bottom to the top section, fold wear, and minor tears in Alba's dress. Filled with the energetic optimism and "can-do" spirit that made Fairbanks a star in the 1920s, these pieces are the perfect homage to the wonderful actor. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
