    Modern Times (United Artists, 1936). Banner (62" X 114").
It has been hailed as one of the greatest silent films ever made and one of Chaplin's masterpieces. Written, produced, directed and scored by Charlie Chaplin, Modern Times was created as a statement about Chaplin's own feelings about the modern era (and the Depression) and the industrialization of civilization. In fact, one of the situations Chaplin created for the film depicted the machines in a factory actually "eating" him alive. It could actually be seen as a allegory to Chaplin's own situation when faced with the modernization and innovation of sound in film. Chaplin knew that sound was taking over his own industry and he used the silent film format to fight back against it. It was to be his final silent film, shot between 1932 and 1936, and it was also the last appearance of the "Little Tramp," as Chaplin felt the character would lose any of its sympathy by having him speak. The large piece offered here is probably the only banner in existence for this legendary film. It is predominantly painted imagery and has edge wear, surface paper loss, staining, and creases and cracks throughout. Even though these issues are present, the banner features an incredible image from one of the premier comedians of all-time. Very Good-.
