Jimmy the Gent (Warner Bros., 1934). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41") Sam Berman Artwork. From the Mike Kaplan Collection.Never before offered by Heritage and once displayed at the Gallery of Film Poster Art at California State Northridge, this only known copy of this one sheet features a wonderful caricature of James Cagney by artist Sam Berman, known in the 1930s for his political caricatures featured in Collier's. Directed by Michael Curtiz, this is Cagney at the peak of his creative powers starring alongside Bette Davis. The haircut Cagney is seen sporting on this one sheet was, reportedly, done in protest of being assigned to this film. Davis supposedly disliked it so much that she refused to have any publicity photos with Cagney and the offending hair style. Davis would go on to star in three more films in 1934, one of which was her break-out role in Of Human Bondage, and Cagney had just starred in Footlight Parade in 1933. Restoration has been applied to correct slight fold wear and separations, as well as a tear that extended from the "C" of Cagney's credit to his shirt collar. There are some unaddressed pinholes, dust shadows, and unobtrusive stains. Due to the scarcity of this title, paper from this film is always popular when offered in auction.
