Description

Goin' to Town (Paramount, 1935). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Three Sheet (41" X 79.75") Style A.
Goin' to Town is a musical comedy featuring the iconic Mae West, who also penned the screenplay, highlighting her trademark wit, charisma, and daring persona in her first film created entirely under the stringent restrictions of the Motion Picture Production Code. Directed by Alexander Hall, the film follows Cleo Borden (West), a sharp-witted and ambitious saloon singer who unexpectedly inherits a fortune and sets her sights on high society, moving to Buenos Aires to navigate wealth, romance, and scandal while pursuing the affections of the reserved English gentleman Edward Carrington (Paul Cavanagh). Known for her bold defiance of social conventions, West had already shocked Broadway with her flamboyantly risqué plays and carried that same fearless energy into Hollywood, where she thrived on controversy and the belief that "there's no such thing as bad publicity." With Goin' to Town, she made one of her first attempts to push back against the restrictive new censorship rules, cleverly infusing the film with her signature double entendres, playful humor, and sultry musical performances. The film remains a testament to West's larger-than-life persona and her ability to work around the censors while still delighting audiences. Adding to its rarity, this fantastic three sheet - in only its second ever Heritage appearance - presents Mae West at her absolute classiest, making it a truly exceptional find for collectors. Airbrushing and touchup have been applied sparingly along the folds and within the red background to correct edge and fold wear, creases, fold/crossfold separation, tears, a couple of small stains, minute chips, and one minor area of paper loss that has been further corrected by replacement.
