    Description

Design for Living (Paramount, 1933). Very Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").
Loosely based on the Noël Coward play of the same name, Design for Living is a pre-Code comedy about a love triangle formed after Gilda (Miriam Hopkins) begins dating two men who also happen to be roommates: George (Gary Cooper) and Tom (Fredric March). The film, directed by Ernst Lubitsch, was controversial even in the pre-Code era for its portrayal of a polyamorous relationship, but its deft handling of the subject helped make it an amusing and highly memorable comedy. Offered for the first time at Heritage is this wonderful stone litho one sheet for Design for Living, which is inspired by the sleek lines and bold geometric shapes of the popular Art Deco style and visually depicts the film's love triangle in an eye-catching and literal way. Prior to backing on linen, the poster displayed some edge and fold wear, minute tears, and tiny chips and separations on the folds. Restoration has addressed these issues. The poster also has a few unobtrusive smudges but has an overall very clean appearance. There is some airbrushing in the top border, the background area near the text and title at the top, and in a spot at the center of the bottom edge of the poster.
