Description

Derby Day (Pathé, 1923). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27.25" X 41").
Created by comedy film producer Hal Roach in 1922, the Our Gang short films were one of the first realistic depictions of children in cinema. The series focused on a group of poor neighborhood kids who behaved as regular children, rather than imitating adult acting styles. The shorts were also notable for showing children of different races as equals during the Jim Crow era of racial segregation, as this poster reflects, with all the children playing together unaffectedly. These films were extremely popular, both on their first release and decades later on television, where the children were dubbed "The Little Rascals". A highlight of many of these films was when the kids would somehow create elaborate vehicles out of scrap materials, and in this entry, they not only have a horse race with the kids as jockeys, but they also have kids in primitive sulkies, pulled by horses, and this is all depicted on this poster, from the nineteenth feature short, Derby Day, and it is a great poster for any horse racing enthusiast! The poster is in fine condition, with some light touchup to fold wear and separation, pinholes, and small chips.
