Description

City Lights (United Artists, 1931). Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Although sound pictures had been around for a couple of years when Charlie Chaplin filmed this romantic comedy, he ultimately decided the poignancy of the story would be better served as a silent -- a genius decision. With a musical score by Chaplin himself, this touching story unfolds as a blind flower girl, played by unknown actress Virginia Cherrill, mistakenly thinks the little Tramp is a wealthy man. In order to help fund an operation for the girl the Tramp works several odd jobs in a series of hilarious setups. One of Chaplin's finest films, the ending is simple perfection and this gorgeous and rare card depicts the two characters in their first meeting, in the scene that some reported that Chaplin worked on for weeks. This card has small pinholes in the borders and two in the artwork, a chip in the lower right corner, a small crease in the lower left corner, and a faint stain in the bottom border. For all fans of the genius of Chaplin, this is the ultimate card to own. Fine+.
