    Description

Chase Me Charlie (Essanay, 1918). One Sheet (28" X 42").
Graced with a lovely scene between everyone's favorite silent comedian and Edna Purviance, this charming poster belies the contentious history behind the film's creation. After Chaplin's contract expired in 1915, Essanay took his recently released two-reel comedy Burlesque on Carmen, added a number of outtakes and a new subplot featuring Ben Turpin, and released the film again as a clunky four-reeler called A Burlesque of Carmen. The problem was, they did it without Chaplin's permission. He sued the studio over what he believed to be unscrupulous copyright infringement, and ultimately lost, allowing Essanay to reconstruct and reissue his films however they saw fit. The result was this compilation of Chaplin's clips and unused footage from The Tramp, By the Sea, The Bank, Shanghaied, A Night Out, In the Park, The Champion, The Woman, and His New Job. This beautiful stone litho poster looks lovely after professional corrections to fold wear, creases, mild tears, and chips in the borders and folds. There were a few chips in the credit area, and a tear from the bottom border to the lower horizontal fold on the left side. Fine+ on Linen.
