    Description

Back to the Woods (Goldwyn, 1920). Swedish Linocut One Sheet (23.5" X 35.5"). Alternate Title: Princess of Trentsville.
Mabel Normand began her acting career at the age of sixteen with Biograph and soon became a major star of the company, usually appearing in comedic films. In 1912 she left Biograph and signed a contract with Keystone, where she appeared in numerous feature length films that elevated her status to comic genius. Many consider her to have been the most brilliant female comic star of the silent screen era. This Swedish poster features a portrait of Normand and was produced using the Linocut printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface and the sheet is inked with a roller called a brayer, and then impressed onto paper. Although linoleum as a floor covering dates to the 1860s, the linocut printing technique was used first by the artists of Die Brücke in Germany between 1905 and 1913 where it had been similarly used for wallpaper printing. They initially described these prints as woodcuts, which sounded more respectable. Heritage is pleased to present several Linocut Swedish posters in this auction, as they are exceedingly rare, with only a very few produced over a short period of time. The poster shows edge wear, a small chip in the bottom border with tape on the verso, a crossfold separation, and right edge wear. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
