Description
Back Stage (Paramount, 1919). Very Good-. Photo (8" X 10").Silver gelatin glossy contact print photo of Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Buster Keaton, and Al St. John in Backstage; one of fourteen shorts in which Keaton appeared with Arbuckle as star and also as the director. When Roscoe Arbuckle struggled with depression after the ordeal of the court trials stemming from Virginia Rappe's death and from which Arbuckle was finally exonerated in the third trial, Keaton helped to support him financially and never forgot that Arbuckle gave him work when he was starting in Hollywood. Several Arbuckle shorts use set pieces other comedians imitated. In Back Stage, Arbuckle creates the falling wall sequence, where a piece of set collapses around him but a window frames him in safety. Keaton again used this wonderful sight gag in his first short One Week (1920) and, most memorably in his 1928 film Steamboat Bill, Jr, where an entire house collapses behind him! The photo has a chip to the left border, missing upper right corner tip, scattered handling and creases, and pinholes.
