    Description
An Even Break (Triangle, 1917). Very Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (28" X 41").In what would be her second ever picture with Triangle, Olive Thomas, a former Ziegfeld Follies performer, is cast as the lead in what would be a story parallel to the star's own career from nonentity to Broadway fame, written by Lambert Hillyer. Claire Curtis (Thomas) is determined to be a Broadway star and her childhood friend Jimmie Strang (Charles Gunn) has always wanted to become an inventor, and his wish is gratified. Traveling to New York in an attempt to sell his marvelous invention, he meets Claire in the larger-than-life city and the old friendship develops into true love. Promising the young star marriage once his fortune is made, in a turn of events, Claire saves Jimmie from being robbed of his invention, thus resulting in both characters receiving their first "big break" in their respective careers. Thomas would continue with a successful film career (appearing in twenty films in just four years) and she married Jack Pickford, the brother of fellow silent star Mary Pickford. Tragically the actress died just three years later after ingesting mercury dichloride, which had been prescribed for her husband's syphilis. This striking stone litho one-sheet (likely the only surviving example of this poster) features an arresting beautiful full-length portrait of the actress and has been professionally restored and backed on linen. Touchup was applied to the folds, fold separation, a few chips, a minor tear in the top border, and the airbrushed borders have addressed a few faint stains.
