    A Night Out (Himalayan Film Paris, Late 1910s). French Grande (47" X 63"). French Title: Charlot en Bombe.
    British-born Charles Chaplin began his American entertainment career in Fred Karno's 1910 touring vaudeville troupe. By 1915 Chaplin had found his way into film, making several shorts that year, with A Night Out being his second comedy with Essanay. It was his first film with Edna Purviance, who would go on to appear as his leading lady for eight more years (and love interest in real life for the next three years). Cross-eyed comic Ben Turpin stars as Chaplin's drinking buddy, and the two go on a booze filled ramble. The pickled pair manages to get kicked out of a restaurant, and upon returning to the their hotel room, Charlie flirts with the married woman across the hall (Purviance). A chain of misunderstandings follows, all suffused with plenty of Chaplin-esque humor. Turpin raises a glass in toast on this exquisite French poster, as bowler-clad, bamboo-cane-toting Charlie slouches fully into his stupor. A definite head-turner, the stone litho color and fine detail make this an essential piece for any finely curated collection. Light restoration has addressed edge wear with chips and tears and fold wear. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
