    Description

20th Century (Columbia, 1934). Fine- on Cardstock. Jumbo Window Card (22" X 28"). From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
A first time offering from Heritage, this piece has the distinction of being the only known copy of a jumbo window card from Howard Hawks' hilarious comedy, and it was displayed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Based on the Hecht-MacArthur Broadway play of the same name, Carole Lombard and John Barrymore respectively star as a rising star and the Broadway producer who develops her career. Many feel that this was the film that helped establish the screwball comedy as a separate genre, which would grow in popularity throughout the rest of the 1930s. Always a skilled comedienne, Lombard became a sensation in the genre and would go on to make a number of other screwball comedies, while Barrymore would declare that this was among one of his favorite films. Deceptively gorgeous and dramatic for its subject matter, this one-of a kind window card has had professional restoration to address a few tears, pinholes, minor chips, and bits of surface wear. Also corrected was a trim on the right side that extended into the image and Columbia logo, as well as a trim through the imprint area. The borders and imprint area have been airbrushed, completing the card's skilled restoration and making it a gem of an item for any collection.
