Cleveland Cycles (1898). Fine+ on Linen. French Advertising Poster (45.5" X 62") Jean "Pal" de Paléologue Artwork.
The 1890s marked a bicycle craze for much of the world, including both sides of the Atlantic. Cleveland Cycles, actually manufactured in Toledo, Ohio, found a profitable market in France, no doubt aided by their gorgeous advertising posters. Referencing the company's North American origins in his illustration, Jean "Pal" de Paléologue is the artist behind this dramatic piece of stone lithography, and in fact created numerous advertisements for several different bicycle companies. Though he gained the majority of his contemporary renown from the rich and sensual images found in his work, Pal also had a much older claim to fame. He was a direct descendent of Byzantine Emperor Constantine XII, referred to as "Prince Paléologue" by a newspaper shortly before his death in 1942. Prior to skilled restoration, the poster once displayed edge wear, some chips in the borders, and a few tears, a couple of which extend into the printing. There were two sections of paper loss in the right border, and the borders have been mostly airbrushed. Fine+ on Linen.
