    Description

Cleopatra by Michelangelo Papuzza (20th Century Fox, R-Late 1970s). Original Mixed Media Concept Artwork on Watercolor Paper (14" X 20").
Costing sixty million dollars (an unbelievable sum in the early 1960s), Cleopatra came close to bankrupting 20th Century Fox. Unbelievably opulent, and graced with the obvious charms of star Elizabeth Taylor, this colorful epic charts the years leading up to the founding of the Roman Empire, and Queen Cleo's legendary conquest of men -- namely Mark Antony, played by Richard Burton. An image arguably as good as Howard Terpning's famous original illustration for the film, this exquisite portrait of the two stars comes courtesy of Italian artist Michelangelo Papuzza, painted as a potential design for a late 1970s Italian reissue campaign. Signed by the artist, this lovely painting shows slight edge wear, a few mild creases, and light foxing. The painting has smudging towards the bottom and small paper lifts in the title. There is adhesive staining on the verso where the paper was once attached to a surface. Fine+.

    Estimate: $800 - $1,600.
