Circus Poster (Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, 1938). One Sheet (28" X 42").
John Ringling first exhibited "Gargantua" in 1938, as Display Number fourteen on a twenty-six item program. He was hauled back and forth before the public in a heavily barred, thickly glassed, and air-conditioned wagon that was drawn by six white horses. He was snarling and menacing, with his acid marked face, and stared out of his cage in a sullen glare. None other than Frank Buck introduced him exclaiming dramatically..."He's the most ferocious, most terrifying and most dangerous of all living creatures!" Gargantua stole the show for years and almost single-handedly kept Ringling out of bankruptcy during the hard times of the war years. This vertical style one sheet poster shows him in his Congo lowlands home. It's a great piece of American entertainment history and a very difficult find in this original condition. The fine stone lithograph is by the desired Strobridge Company. There is edge wear in the left and right borders, some stains in the top image and borders, a top right corner small chip, and an appearance snipe remnant in the lower right border. Fine/Very Fine.
