Chinatown Nights (Paramount, 1929). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 40.75").
Caught in the midst of a major technological transition, Paramount decided that this silent gangster drama needed to make the jump into the new talkie craze. Unfortunately, filming was already one third of the way complete when the studio alerted director William A. Wellman of their verdict. With hastily written dialogue in place, production continued after a four day pause, requiring the actors to contribute their voices to a dub reel for the already filmed scenes. Though stars Wallace Beery and Warner Oland readily complied, the feature's leading lady, Florence Vidor, did not. Instead, Nella Walker took over the actress' dubbed lines, and silent star Vidor left the silver screen forever after this picture's release. During this period of technological transition, it was common for studios to issue both silent and talkie versions of their posters. Presented for the first time at Heritage and hailing from the picture's silent release, this beautiful stone litho one sheet had professional restoration to address fold wear and separation, moderate tears, and pinholes. There was a chip at the lower crossfold, one in the mid-background, as well as chips in the borders and folds. The poster also had a couple of tears in Wallace Beery's forehead, the borders have been airbrushed, and the linen has been trimmed nearly to the borders. Fine on Linen.

    Estimate: $2,500 - $5,000.
