Charlot: Charlie Chaplin by Auguste Leymarie (Agence General Cinematographique. 1917). Fine+. Signed Original French Poster Maquette (16.5" X 22.25").A charming piece from the earliest days of cinema, Heritage makes its first ever presentation of this delightful mixed media illustration by French poster artist Auguste Leymarie. Although he was well versed in oil painting and created several other commercial advertisements, Leymarie is by far most remembered for his series of Charlie Chaplin stock poster illustrations commissioned by Agence General Cinematographique and Everest Films. In a unique style completely different from that of his other works, Leymarie's drawings of Chaplin are distinct and bold in their linework, yet still have a whimsical air any fan of the comedian would love. Signed by the artist, this splendid piece of art shows soft creases, minor paper lifts, a minute corner chip, and pinholes, some of which are enlarged. There are a few tears that have been braced with strips of paper tape on the verso, as well as smudging and mostly unobtrusive staining. These issues, however, do not affect the eye-catching display of Leymarie's artwork, a fine piece unlike any other in the world.
