    Casablanca: Café Chair (Warner Bros., 1942). Fine+. Screen-Used Prop Chair (34" X 15" X 15").
Screen-used props are always a rare treat for movie fans, especially when they come from such a beloved film as Casablanca. Made from bamboo and woven rattan, this chair can be spotted by keen-eyed viewers in shots of Rick's Café Américain and is one of the few chairs to survive in the eighty years since the movie's filming. Some of the chairs from the production gradually made their way through Hollywood to the Cinema Mercantile Co. prop house, which then sold their inventory to the public in 1983 during a massive liquidation sale. The company had come into possession of several unique items from Casablanca, such as decorative lamps, the café's stained glass front doors, and even Sam's famous piano. Over the decades, this chair has experienced a normal amount of wear typical with its usage. There is some loss in the chair's woven backing and bindings, as well as some scuffs and surface wear to the varnish. A couple of strips of red plastic tape have been wrapped around next to the bindings at the top of the chair's back, and the front right leg has become misaligned. Like the other surviving chairs, a red wooden board with some paper remnants has been attached to the top of the seat, most likely added by the prop department for increased durability when the chair was potentially used in other productions. Props tend not to live long in Hollywood due to their persistent re-use, so this piece of cinema history should be at the top of the list for classic collectors everywhere!

    Estimate: $5,000 - $10,000.
