    Description

Carter the Great (1926). Eight Sheet (80" X 106") "Carter Cheats the Gallows."
Charles Joseph Carter (1874-1936) was a journalist and lawyer whose fascination with magic led him to a new career. Due to considerable competition in the U.S., Carter made the wise choice to pursue life as a stage magician abroad, where he became quite famous as "Carter the Great." His most popular acts included the "sawing a woman in half" illusion, making a live elephant disappear, and his dead-awakening "Spirit Cabinet." The stone litho eight sheet seen here depicts Carter's "cheating the gallows" act. Accused of witchcraft, the condemned, shrouded magician would vanish, just as he dropped to the end of a hangman's noose. Still incredibly vibrant in color, this large format poster has had touchup to the folds and creases. It still shows some unaddressed pinholes, small tears and chips in the borders, and a dust shadow near the upper left corner. This poster was backed on linen in two separate pieces, and then later joined together. Very Fine- on Linen.

    Estimate: $600 - $1,200.
