Description

    Captain Blood (First National, 1935). U.S. Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Based on the novel by Rafael Sabatini, this movie was a major gamble for Warner Brothers, as it lacked any notable stars. Robert Donat was originally cast as Peter Blood, but when he failed to show up for filming, the role was offered to Brian Aherne, who turned it down. Desperate for a leading man, the studio gambled on then-unknown Australian actor Errol Flynn, a risk that paid off handsomely, as both Flynn and his co-star Olivia DeHavilland became box-office superstars after the release of this picture. This fantastic title card features spectacular art by famed illustrator Alex Raymond, best known as the artist of the Flash Gordon newspaper strip, which set a new benchmark for comic artwork and is revered to this day. Rarely offered, this highly desirable title card has a British "Cert. U" stamp but was printed in the U.S.A., one pinhole in each corner, a crease down the left side, and the original Warner Brothers distributor logo painted over to read "First National." Whether you're a fan of Flynn, Raymond, swashbucklers, superb artwork, or just very rare title cards, this is one you won't want to let slip away. Fine+.
