Bolero (Paramount, 1934). Fair/Good on Linen. One Sheet (27.25" X 41") Style A. From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
By 1934, George Raft had developed an on-screen persona heavily influenced by his appearance in the 1932 hit Scarface, forming something of an archetypal image for gangster characters. In Bolero, however, Raft returns to the art that first led him into show business: dancing. He stars opposite of Carole Lombard in a story inspired by the life of Maurice Mouvet, with dances choreographed by the famed ballroom team of Veloz and Yolanda. This combination of talent proved a hit at the boxoffice, with such an intense audience response that the studio made a spiritual sequel, Rumba, the following year with the same stars and choreographers. This one sheet is a beautiful example of the richness of color stone litho printing can create, and it has been restored to no longer show slight fold wear, a few tears, and pinholes. There was paper loss in the lower image of George Raft and Carole Lombard, a few chips in the top image of the stars, chips in the borders, as well as paper loss in the upper right of the poster, including the upper text, George Raft's credit, and the top part of the title. The linen has been trimmed nearly to the borders, but not into the poster itself.

    Estimate: $2,500 - $5,000.
