    Description

Blonde Venus (Paramount, 1932). Special Linen Finish Full-Bleed One Sheet (27" X 40") Charles Lennox Wright II Artwork.
Marlene Dietrich was known for her "bedroom eyes" and the painting for this poster promoted that exotic look. This was her fourth American film and was directed by her mentor Josef von Sternberg. This is one of the rare posters of a "Color Print Enlargement - Like A Painting in Oils," as it's listed in the original 1932 pressbook. This was a special one sheet available to theatres for the lobby. Actually, it was a beautifully produced art print of a Charles Lennox Wright II painting. Wright was a very fine painter who studied with William Merritt Chase and illustrated movie posters for RKO in the 1920s and 30s. He, interestingly enough, chose the strict interpretation of "Venus, the "Goddess of Love," as his inspiration for the painting. This unique piece does not often surface, and we are pleased that another one has appeared. Backed on linen, restoration to this beautiful piece had been applied to creasing, small bits of paper loss at the edges, and tears into the interior. Also addressed were tears that extended to the top of Dietrich's head and into her face and chest. The poster shows post-restoration creasing, but still presents well overall. Fine- on Linen.
