    Description

Life is Real (Universal, 1934). One Sheet (27.5" X 41"). Also known as Kentucky Minstrels.
Although the title on this poster is for Life Is Real, this was the US release title for the British film Kentucky Minstrels. The film was made in 1934 and was the first British film to star African-American's. And although the films star is listed as Nina Mae McKinney (she had a musical number at the end of the film), the real stars were Harry Scott and Eddie Whaley. The team of Scott and Whaley had immigrated to England in 1909 and had quickly ascended in popularity throughout Europe. Producer Harry S. Pepper produced their radio show The Kentucky Minstrels from 1934 to 1950, and then came to them with this film project. McKinney had made a cinematic splash in 1929 in King Vidor's Hallelujah! but had little screen success afterwards. She was a huge star in Europe, billed as The Black Garbo and thus, was a natural for the final number in The Kentucky Minstrels. Since this poster features McKinney's credit over Scott & Whaley's and since Universal's distribution of the film is not mentioned, we can only assume that this is a reissue of the film from sometime in the late 1930s to the 1940s. The poster is somewhat brittle and shows some minor fold separations, chipping to the center-points and the right border is showing many small tears and some ruffling. This is an extremely rare poster that is not mentioned in A Separate Cinema. Fine+.
