    Description

Battling Jane (Paramount, 1918). Swedish Linocut One Sheet (23.5" X 35") Eric Rohman Artwork.
Dorothy Gish plays Jane, a vagabond who stumbles upon a family quarrel between a doctor and his wife (George Nichols and May Hall). When the doctor runs out, and the wife unexpectedly dies, Jane is left as the sole guardian of their infant son (Ernest Marion). After entering the child in a baby contest, Jane wins $500, which she must protect - often at gunpoint - when the doctor returns. Gish enjoyed a long and impressive career, finding regular work in television after largely retiring from the screen following the coming of sound. Making its Heritage debut, this Swedish Linocut one sheet features some great artwork by the prolific Eric Rohman. The poster was produced using the Linocut printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface and the sheet is inked with a roller called a brayer, and then impressed onto paper. Although linoleum as a floor covering dates to the 1860s, the linocut printing technique was used first by the artists of Die Brücke in Germany between 1905 and 1913 where it had been similarly used for wallpaper printing. They initially described these prints as woodcuts, which sounded more respectable. There is creasing, a slight dust shadow in the upper left corner, and a small tear at the bottom. Folded, Very Fine-.
