Back Street (Universal, 1932). Very Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41"). From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
Offered for the first time at Heritage, this gorgeous one sheet practically glows with color thanks to its warm cityscape backdrop, yet the poster still has palpable sense of loneliness in the portrait of starlet Irene Dunne. Based off of Fannie Hurst's bestselling novel, the story revolves around a long-term affair between Dunne and John Boles, who plays a wealthy financier trapped in a loveless marriage. Though the picture could have easily fallen into the trend of theatrical over-acting so common during the 1930s, Dunne plays her character with a restraint that adds realism to her tragedy and generates sympathy from the viewer. In excellent condition not often seen in posters from this time period, this one sheet has had light touchup to the folds for slight fold separations, and it still shows a couple of unaddressed pinholes at the top. It would have presented well even before its restoration, but now looks even better after these bits of touchup.

    Estimate: $2,500 - $5,000.
